First day impression and formalities
My first day of the internship was a disappointment as the Calcutta High Court was closed for summer holidays. I reached 30 minutes early and waited outside the office. The first day at the office was warm and welcoming. The other two interns also joined on the same day. However, the work given was quite light. The associates were affable and helping.
Major Roles and Responsibilities
I was in my 2nd year and the majority of the work which happened was related to the civil disputes. So, it was very difficult to find a proper work for me. However, once I got familiar with the stuff, I was asked to prepare brief on arbitration matters, make documents pertaining to list of dates, and case synopsis.
Working Environment
The work environment was very easy going initially but as I got familiar, then the work started flowing in large numbers.The number of people working in the firm is less yet the efficiency is pretty high. The people are very much work-centric but the environment is very homely, so you will not feel out of the place.
Experience of Interacting with Seniors
Tanuj sir is friendly and makes you feel comfortable around him. He is approachable and sometimes assigns work to interns but usually, Aviroop sir does the task of assigning work. The associates interact with interns and treat you as equal; making the work environment amicable and devoid of senior-junior hierarchy.
Extension of Internship
You can extend your internship for a month if you wish to do so. I would recommend not preferring for more than a month as there is not much to do and you can get a fair idea of how actually courts work.
Highlight of the internship
The number of cases that the firm deals in. The plethora of cases doesn’t leave space for idle time and boredom.
Overall Experience
The associates would not burden us with work. My work was basically related to case reading, visiting the Court and taking further dates of the cases. I would suggest to not do an internship under a solicitor firm as early as 2nd year because it takes a lot more than just legal sense to match with the working of the firm.
Skill Set
There is no need for any particular set of skills. Though, one should be well versed with their subjects as it will be easier in understanding case files and ongoing cases in courts.
Office Timings
The office timings were 10:00-16:00 hours.
Suggestions for accommodation or places to chill near the office
I live in Kolkata so there wasn’t any need for accommodation but the office is situated in B.B.D. Bagh where there is a bunch of places that one can rent out and stay. There are multiple eateries around the area that one can go for lunch or a snack. Since Kolkata is known for its delicious street food, you should definitely try them out around this place, spread within a radius of 1km.
